The Petr-Pepa-Laděnka trio established the “PEPELA” band in 1985. From the very beginning this band impressed by a non-traditional form of performance of two American-folk guitars being the closest to the style of Doc Watson, but in connection with Czech folk music. The band won in the Porta competition in České Budějovice and achieved further successes too, already as a quartet. In 1986, after the participation in Pilsen Porta, the band split up by reason of military service of two members and Laděňka's motherhood.
After a ten-year break the band revives in quite a variable formation in the form of a studio band. In this period several demos with approximately 50 songs came into being. The repertoire of the band includes mostly original pieces or pieces taken over from American folk song or current country music, but with own lyrics.
In the spring of 2002 PEPELA was extended by Lívie Karlů, a singer, who initiated further production. If she is a notable guest for the album "Propast u nohou" (Abyss at the feet), in case of the album "Vzteky bez sebe" (Out of temper) she has already been the determining personality who, besides the authorship of the majority of new songs, provides her irreplaceable peculiar performance for the album. This second part of an intended trilogy is thus characterized by harder sound, higher portion of rhytmics and instruments like saxophone, string, percussion instruments, bongos and also keyboard instruments. The band may rarely be heard on stages, and with regard to full engagement of interpreters in their own occupations of the late-developed capitalism in Czech countries, only as guests.
And a word by the singer/author concerning the album „Vzteky bez sebe“ (Out of temper)
„You have such a Czech mongrel in your hand“, replied Pavel Sonda, our sound mixer, to the question concerning the category for classification of this outgrowth. The singer – a bit country, a bit pop, a bit jazz, the music – a bit folk, a bit pop-country……. Well, someone may be puzzled, but I see an advantage in it. I think that everyone who finds a little time and puts the earphones on will find his/her favourite. And if we return to the mongrel, and I do not mean the sweet dog mongrel now, but a hazel-nut which helped Cinderella on the way to happiness, I would be really glad if you, when cracking the shell, felt at least half the same as the authors of the album „Vzteky bez sebe“ (Out of temper) after its completion.
Livie wishes pleasant listening and good luck.
Recording was realized in the home environment of the PAST studio in Hradec Králové, with the sound mixer Pavel Sonda again (phone: 495454252) who transformed into a member of the band now and then. The project was financed by the REVEL company, the Czech manufacturer of cross-linked polyethylene and the supplier of floor heating systems who is the right holder too.
